Tostan works to empower African women and persuade whole villages to end the tradition of female genital cutting. Tostan's indigenously driven strategy has been successful in thousands of villages and is gaining momentum.

This is similar to the campaign in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to end foot-binding in China. In a single generation, this painful and disfiguring practice ceased because mothers were reassured that their daughters would be marriageable with normal-size feet. Tostan is an ideal charity for the proceeds from Kim's book; the people served by Tostan deserve the same chance for mutually satisfying love as people anywhere else on the planet.
